New Books

Diamonds in Nature: A Guide to Rough Diamonds

Dr. Ralf Tappert participated at the last C.I.G. Diamond Grading workshop and donated a copy to our library.

Diamonds in Nature: A Guide to Rough Diamonds illustrates the range of crystal shapes, colours, surface textures, and mineral inclusions of rough, uncut, naturally forming diamonds. Each chapter contains photographs that show the unique physical characteristics of the diamonds, and the accompanying text describes the processes that led to their formation.

This book is an invaluable reference manual for professional geoscientists―including gemmologists and exploration geologists.

Gemstone Buying Guide, Third Edition

This updated full-colour guide to coloured gems provides concise yet comprehensive information on quality evaluation, price comparison, gem identification, cutting styles, treatments, fake stones, optical effects, gem care and geographic sources. Many of the gems are shown mounted in striking designer jewelry.

There are 323 new colour photos and several new gem species and varieties in this 3rd edition.

Price Can$ 26.95 (available during the Vancouver Gem Show)

GL Gem Spectrometer 2017 model

Our BESTSELLER with over 300 users in 35 countries. With the new “Point & Shoot” GLGemSpec software (version 3.3)  spectra can be saved and matched with the integrated spectral library of over 100 gem references.

For diamond characterization we  recommend the use of the GL Gem Spectrometer to detect any “Cape lines”. If not present inspect the diamond under a microscope with crossed polarizers; for instructions download article here (PDF).

For diamond PL studies we recommend the Nichia UV 365nm LED flashlight; it is the best true LW UV LED light with almost no visible light being emitted.

The 2017 model of the GL Gem Spectrometer is now available.

Watch how a normalized absorption spectrum of green glass is obtained in 25 seconds (video, no sound).

GL Gem Raman PL535 2017 model

The GL Gem Raman system is being used by jewellery appraisers, gem dealers, mineral collectors, researchers in geoscience applications in 22 countries.

With the new GLGemRaman software (version 3.2) spectra can be saved and matched with the integrated spectral library of over 300 gem references or imported into a separate searchable database program with over 3,500 edited references; this database is linked to the large on-line mineralogical RRUFF database for Raman spectra.

CIGem News Fall 2016

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

after attending  Facets 2016 in Sri Lanka and spending some time in the Austrian Alps I am back  preparing for our fall activities. I am looking forward to the upcoming workshop and welcome our foreign participants.

I want to thank Gamini Zoysa who hosted an Advanced Spectrometry Workshop in Colombo after the gem show; we had attendees from several countries who could familiarize themselves first hand with the operation of  the GL Gem Spectrometer  and the GL Gem Raman PL535.

Also start planning for the AGTA GemFair in Tucson from Jan 31 – Feb 5.

Please note in your calendar the following dates:

Visit to the Gem Mining Areas in Rathnapura, Sri Lanka

I visited several several small scale sapphire mines nearby with Kasun (Hotel Gem Land).

Highly Recommended New Book

Gem Guide

I just received this exceptional new book (almost coffee table size). Each of the 440 pages is full of images and in-depth descriptions of gems and jewellery; I liked in particular the section on emerald and opal.

It can be purchased for US$ 35 or less at Amazon or Target.

CIGem News Summer 2016

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We had many visitors to our booth during the Vancouver Gem & Mineral Show last week-end; I am now preparing for a trip to Europe and Sri Lanka. Please note that  there are limited Office Hours from August 23 – September 19.

If you are interested in participating in an advanced spectroscopy workshop (“Raman and PL Spectroscopy in Gem & Mineral Identification” with hands-on exercises) on September 7  – a few days after FACETS Sri Lanka, Colombo (September 1 – 4) – contact Gamini Zoysa at gaminigz@hotmail.com for further information.

Enjoy the rest of your summer holiday season.

A new educational CD about spectroscopy

A Guide to the Spectroscope

John Harris has published a Guide to the Spectroscope (PowerPoint presentation).

It is a valuable educational tool for beginners as well as experienced spectroscopists.

Instructors will love the format as the guide can easily be projected in a classroom situation or during a workshop.

.

Also have a look at his “Through my Spectroscope” column which now includes  his own GL Gem Spectrometer.

New version of Spekwin32

Dr. Menges has published the final version of Spekwin 32 (1.72.2, June 15); it is a comprehensive software for editing and publishing spectra and allows direct import of GLGemSpec files (.fak) and GLGemRaman files (.rruff). He has started work on the all-new Spekwin32 successor to be released later this year.

Of particular interest is the Spectroscope View for owners of the GL Gem Spectrometer. Download the guide “Show Spectroscope View”

Also look at his universal software for DIY webcam spectrometers.

News from Gemlab R&T

Users of the new software version 3.00 of both the GL Gem Spectrometer and the GL Gem Raman PL535 2016/17 models should soon receive a small update.

The spectrometer software will have an “auto-y scale” icon (like in the Raman software by default) which keeps the spectrum visible at all times; this is possible to the new electronics built into the model 2016/17 spectrometers. As the spectrum is delivered in real-time adjustments to exposure, etc are seen immediately.

For the Raman software the search function will be unlocked and the provided data-bases can be accessed directly; user spectra can then then be easily added.
