Participants from 12 countries including Canada attended the opening ceremony at the Hambacher Schloss where in 1832 over 30,000 people demanded a unified Europe. The President of the state legislature of Rheinland Pfalz Winfried Hirschberger expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in the harmonization of European training programs in the jewellery field. He welcomed the attendance of observer schools from outside Europe.
The Canadian Institute of Gemmology has been invited as a permanent observer to the annual meetings for 3 years. The school was reprensented by its director Wolf Kuehn, Vancouver and C.I.G. Advisory Board member Charles Lewton-Brain, Calgary and several students.
The 2000 meeting of the PLE will take place in Madrid, Spain.
