The GL Gem SpectrometerTM NIR PL405 is a dual purpose research spectrometer for photo luminescence (PL) studies; with the included GL Halogen Gem Holder it can be used for VIS-NIR spectroscopy (550 – 1,000 nm) as well but will not display the Cape lines of diamonds.

PLEASE NOTE: The spectrometer has a higher resolution than our regular GL Gem Spectrometer, a built-in Long Wave Pass Filter (LWPF) and is optimized for the NIR range. The Cape lines for diamond characterization cannot be observed; we recommend the regular spectrometer with PL405 kit.

It allows identification of many gemstones such as ruby, sapphire, emerald, spinel, alexandrite, etc. based on their PL response alone and is an efficient tool for quick diamond testing. It will detect the GR1 center for irradiated diamonds and the Si center often seen in CVD grown diamonds (in some cases without LN cooling).

It can be used in addition to the GL Gem Spectrometer or on its own as a dedicated PL and transmission spectrometer as many gem materials have important features in the VIS-NIR range. For instance it will identify untreated jadeite (it will not show the PL band for polymer treated jade due to the built-in LWP filter). Diamond irradiation, copper content in “Paraiba” tourmaline will be visible in the spectrum. First studies indicate that heat treatments such as in red spinel can be determined.

In PL mode it can serve as a low-cost PL spectrometer.

Photoluminescence studies with low-cost spectrometers is a relatively new application; the supplied spectra show initial results of our work.

NOTE: For general spectroscopy and PL studies we recommend the GL Gem Spectrometer and the GL Analyzer PL405/GL Xenon Flashlight Combo Kit

Our Warranty and Commitment

The GL Gem Spectrometer is an advanced gem testing instrument for users who have a good understanding of spectroscopy and should be familiar with the use of a traditional gemmological spectroscope and the interpretation of spectra. The instrument is not capable of identifying or naming a sample; it should be used with other gem testing tools before arriving at a conclusion.

If you are not satisfied with the performance of the spectrometer we will accept returns within 10 days but have to charge a restocking fee of 10% to cover our expenses of shipping/handling and recalibration if necessary. The purchaser is also responsible for the shipping and insurance to return the item.

We will repair and replace your GL Gem Spectrometer if necessary due to defective parts, etc during the first 6 months unless other consumer protection regulations exist in your country. We also offer firmware/CCD upgrades for a processing fee of US$ 495 which covers the update, new software, re-alignment and re-calibration, etc. and return shipping charges; other repair services upon request. Software updates are always free.
