CIGem News Summer 2017

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

View from Sas Ciampac, 2672 m with interesting geological formations of Sella Group in the Dolomites, Italy

I have been travelling  in Europe in late June/early July and was lucky to spend two weeks in the Dolomites (Colfosco and Cortina d’Ampezzo – both places ideal for alpine hiking and mountain biking).

After my return we are now getting ready for the next Vancouver Gem & Mineral Show in Kitsilano scheduled for August 11 – 13. Books, used instruments, special gem study collections with gem and mineral liquidation are on sale. I am looking forward to meeting you. And have a nice summer holiday!

GL Gem Halogen Light Holder Update

Recent purchasers of the 2017 GL Gem Spectrometer may have noticed an additional SMA 905 port on top of the GL Gem Light holder.

Together with a solarization resistant fiber assembly the extra port can be used to connect with the built in halogen light and/or attached to other UV light sources (UVNS) and lasers.

We are just beginning with our research and will report about possible applications in the next GL Newsletter.

New Books

Diamonds in Nature: A Guide to Rough Diamonds

Dr. Ralf Tappert participated at the last C.I.G. Diamond Grading workshop and donated a copy to our library.

Diamonds in Nature: A Guide to Rough Diamonds illustrates the range of crystal shapes, colours, surface textures, and mineral inclusions of rough, uncut, naturally forming diamonds. Each chapter contains photographs that show the unique physical characteristics of the diamonds, and the accompanying text describes the processes that led to their formation.

This book is an invaluable reference manual for professional geoscientists―including gemmologists and exploration geologists.

after attending  Facets 2016 in Sri Lanka and spending some time in the Austrian Alps I am back  preparing for our fall activities. I am looking forward to the upcoming workshop and welcome our foreign participants.

I want to thank Gamini Zoysa who hosted an Advanced Spectrometry Workshop in Colombo after the gem show; we had attendees from several countries who could familiarize themselves first hand with the operation of  the GL Gem Spectrometer  and the GL Gem Raman PL535.

Also start planning for the AGTA GemFair in Tucson from Jan 31 – Feb 5.

Please note in your calendar the following dates:
